Like the one you love… R.I.P Bernie Mac
August 9, 2008So I guess this is my FIRST official blog post with this cute new design. I still need to fix it up, but I felt compelled to write this down while it is semi fresh in my mind.
I learned that comedian Bernie Mac passed away today. I was so sad. He was such a funny man, and even more than that you can tell… you could tell he was just a down to earth type of person. One of the last interviews I remember about him was on the David Letterman show. I tried to find the clip on you tube dot com but couldn’t. I am hoping it’ll show up one day. I remember that day I developed a new found respect for him, not just as an entertainer, but as a man who was just real…
I believe he was on Letterman promoting the movie Pride that had just came out at the time with him & Terrance Howard. He mentioned how he doesn’t really hang out in Hollywood, that he kept his same friends in Chicago… He talked about his wife and how he had been married for almost 30 years I think… and I just thought that was amazing because that meant he got married when he was like 19, 20. I guess Dave thought that was pretty amazing too cause he asked what the secret to the longevity of his marriage was. Bernie turn to him and said something to the effect of, “Well Dave… you gotta like them… ya know.” Then he went on to crack a joke that I wish I could remember now…
The essence of what he was trying to say though was that yes, love the person you want to marry, but like them too… because sometimes you aren’t gonna feel in love… beauty fades, people change, and how is your marriage going to sustain when those things aren’t there anymore… yeah man. Love them, but like who they are as a person too.
I used to alway say when I find the man who can get on my nerves, and I still wanna be around him all the time… He’s the one! lol
I’ve always believed that the person you marry should not only compliment you, but should be one of your best friends. When my grandfather passed away last year, one thing I constantly heard mention was how he and my grandmother were always together. They were, in fact, best friends.
I think in this day & age with celebrities falling in and out of love, whirlwind romances… it’s good to know there are still some down to earth ones out there. Mister Bernard J. McCoullugh aka Bernie Mac, you will be missed.
